How long does it take and how much does it cost to build a container house?

Modular container house with two floors and bright rooms D04 - Container houses

If you are wondering how long it takes and how much it costs to build a house from containers, the short answer is this: at FDC Container Houses, production takes 6–8 weeks, actual assembly takes 1–2 days, and you can move into the house in about 2 months. Prices start at €2.930 + VAT for the A01 model — a one-room, no-bathroom, 9,6 sq m monoblock house — and go up to €39.900 + VAT for the D01 two-story model, which has 90 sq m, 3 bedrooms, bathroom and kitchen area. The prices shown are for the standard version of each model and do not include transportation and assembly, which are determined depending on the distance from the factory to your location.

In short, a FDC container house combines two advantages that you rarely find together: it is built much faster than a classic construction and has a clear starting price, associated with a specific model, which you see from the start. Below we explain, in turn, how long each stage takes, why it is built so quickly, how much each category of house costs and what influences the final price.

How long does it take to build a container house?

The big advantage of a container home over traditional construction is speed. The house is manufactured in a factory, in a controlled environment, while you prepare your land — the two stages take place in parallel, not one after the other. This explains why, on average, only about 2 months pass from order to actual move-in.

The stages and how long each one lasts

The path from decision to ready-to-live-in home has a few clear steps:

  • Consulting and bidding — talk to a consultant, choose the standard model or request a customized configuration and establish the location and equipment details together. This is also where any special preparations are communicated from the start (space for air conditioning, supports for a later roof, future extensions).
  • Production — takes 6–8 weeks. The structure is made in the factory, the walls are made of sandwich panels with PIR foam, and the insulation is made of mineral wool, in the ceiling and floor. Next comes the carpentry, finishing and, where applicable, the fully equipped bathroom — depending on the model.
  • delivery — it depends on the distance from the factory to your location.
  • mounting — it actually lasts 1–2 days, depending on the model.

Basically, while your house is in production, you can prepare the concrete slabs or pillars and access for the truck, so that upon delivery, assembly can be done quickly.

How long does installation take, depending on the model?

The actual installation varies depending on the complexity of the house:

Regardless of the model, at the end of the assembly, the house arrives finished and ready to go, with the bathroom fully equipped and the finishes of your choice already installed.

Why is it being built so quickly?

A FDC container house is designed and manufactured from scratch, as a complete and modern home. Because the work is done in a controlled environment, it does not depend on the weather, the organization of a traditional construction site or the coordination of several teams on the ground. As a result, the deadlines are predictable: you know from the beginning that production takes 6–8 weeks and that you can move in in about 2 months — significantly faster than in a classic construction, where the same result can take much longer.

How much does a container house cost?

FDC container homes start at €2.930 + VAT for the A01 model — a one-room, no-bathroom, 9,6 sq m monoblock house — and can go up to €39.900 + VAT for the D01 two-story model, which has 90 sq m, 3 bedrooms, bathroom and kitchen area. What influences the final price?

Starting from the starting price of the model, several factors can raise the final cost, depending on what you choose:

  • The level of insulation. The standard insulation includes walls made of sandwich panels with 40 mm PIR foam and mineral wool in the ceiling and floor. For increased thermal comfort, you can choose walls made of sandwich panels with 60, 80 or 100 mm PIR foam and double-layer mineral wool in the ceiling and floor.
  • The finishes. On the outside, you can opt for cladding with thermotreated paneling in several shades, wood-imitation sandwich panels or wooden ribbing. On the inside, beyond the standard white corrugated sheet finish, there is the option of a smooth finish, cladding with melamine chipboard in various colors or wooden ribbing.
  • Carpentry. The PVC profile can have 4 or 6 chambers, and the windows 2 or 3 sheets of glass (tripan glass), for added thermal and acoustic comfort.
  • Personalization and features. The compartmentalization, colors and features can be adapted to your preferences, and some preparations (space for air conditioning, supports on the structure for a roof installed later) are communicated during the bidding phase.

What the displayed prices do not include

The price on the site does not include transportation and assembly. These are offered together, as a single complete service, and their cost cannot be communicated exactly in advance, because it depends on the distance from the factory to your location. Therefore, the final value is established in the offer, depending on the location. The offer also includes any additional features that you choose over the standard version.

From order to move: what to expect

Family in the kitchen of a container house - Container houses

To get a complete picture of the time and costs, here's what the whole process looks like, end to end: you choose the model and establish the details during the bidding stage, the house goes into production for 6–8 weeks, is delivered depending on the distance and is assembled in 1–2 days. In about 2 months you can move in.

For everything to go smoothly, there are a few things that the client needs to know from the start. The land must be able to support the weight of the container, the transport truck and the unloading equipment, and the access road must be wide enough for the truck to enter the site. The house must be placed on concrete slabs or pillars, 10–15 cm from the ground, for proper ventilation; these slabs or pillars are prepared by the client before the day of assembly. After assembly, the client is also responsible for furnishing the kitchen area and connecting to utilities — FDC Container Houses can make the connection at the time of assembly if the external installations are already prepared at the location.
